Franchise FAQ
We’ve been at this since 1984, and we’ve learned what works and what doesn’t. If you’re considering joining us, here are the straight answers to the questions we hear most often.
Common Questions
Do I need garage door experience to own a Mainspring franchise?
No. We’ve built our training program for owners who know how to run a business, not necessarily how to wind a torsion spring. Our journeyman technicians handle the technical work. You handle hiring, scheduling, and making sure every customer gets a square deal. We’ve trained teachers, sales managers, and retired military officers into solid operators. What matters more than trade knowledge is that you show up, follow the system, and stand behind your work.
What’s the total investment to open a Mainspring franchise?
Most franchisees invest between $125,000 and $275,000 to get their doors open, depending on territory size, whether you lease or buy vehicles, and local build-out costs. That range covers your franchise fee, initial equipment and inventory, vehicle wraps, marketing launch, and working capital to carry you through the first few months. We don’t hide costs in footnotes. Before you sign anything, you’ll see a detailed breakdown so there are no surprises on the bill.
Does Mainspring offer financing help?
We don’t lend money directly, but we’ve built relationships with third-party lenders who understand our model and have financed dozens of our franchisees. Many owners also use SBA-backed loans, home equity, or retirement account rollovers. We’ll introduce you to the people who can actually get it done, not just run your credit and disappear.
How big is my territory, and is it protected?
Your territory is exclusive and protected by contract. We don’t crowd our markets. The exact size depends on population density, typically 150,000 to 400,000 residents, and we define it by ZIP code so there’s no finger-pointing later. Another Mainspring truck won’t roll through your area. We’ve seen what happens when brands sell overlapping territories, and we don’t do it.
How long is the training program?
Four weeks total. Two weeks at our headquarters in the Midwest, where you’ll work alongside our trainers on real doors, real calls, real customer conversations. Then two weeks in your own market with our launch team beside you, making sure your first jobs go right and your phone gets answered by a live person from day one. You’ll also spend time in the field with a journeyman technician, because an owner who understands the work makes better decisions about the work.
What ongoing fees should I expect?
Like most franchise systems, we collect a monthly royalty based on gross revenue, which funds continued training, brand development, and the operational support you call when something unusual shows up at a customer’s door. There’s also a modest marketing fund contribution that pools resources for regional and national campaigns you couldn’t run alone. We don’t layer on hidden technology fees or mandatory supplier markups. The numbers are in the disclosure document, and we’ll walk through them line by line before you commit.
How long does it take to open my doors?
Most franchisees are operational within 60 to 90 days of signing. The variables are financing approval, vehicle acquisition, and local business licensing, which moves at different speeds depending on your municipality. We’ve opened locations faster when everything lines up, and we’ve seen delays when a city inspector takes his time. We’ll push where we can, but we won’t cut corners to hit a date. Krafted right, every time.
What support do I get after I’m open?
A dedicated franchise business coach who knows your market, your numbers, and your name. Regional training events twice yearly. A 24/7 technical hotline when a technician encounters a door they’ve never seen before. Marketing materials that actually work in your territory, not generic templates. And access to our national accounts with suppliers, which means you pay less for springs, openers, and cables than an independent ever could. We’re named for the spring that powers a watch, and the springs that carry your door’s entire weight, because everything depends on the part you don’t see until it fails. Our support works the same way.
What does the ideal Mainspring franchisee look like?
Someone who’s managed people and understands that the customer doesn’t care about your morning. They care that you show up when you say, quote the flat price before the wrench comes out, and come back if it’s not right. Our best owners are former military officers, plant managers, and small-business operators who’ve already learned that systems matter more than charisma. They don’t need to be the smartest person in the room, but they need to hire people who are, and then get out of their way.
What’s my next step if I want to learn more?
Call our franchise development line at (844) 755-5838. A real person will answer, because that’s how we operate. We’ll send you our Franchise Disclosure Document, schedule a call with our development team, and if it makes sense for both sides, we’ll invite you to headquarters to see how we train, how we treat customers, and whether this fits who you are. There’s no pressure and no deposit to start the conversation. We’ve been at this since 1984, and we’re not interested in selling a franchise to someone who shouldn’t own one. That hurts everybody.
