The spring replacement was done sloppy - the door still groaned, the cables were frayed where they’d been pinched - and the homeowner, a woman in her sixties who’d called because her car was trapped in the garage, was near tears. The technician packed his tools, cashed the check, and drove off. That was standard practice back then. We decided, standing in that driveway, that it wouldn’t be ours.
We started Mainspring Garage Door Co. that same year with one commitment: we’d quote the full price before touching a wrench, and we’d finish the job so the homeowner never had to call us back for the same problem. The name came from the mainspring in a mechanical watch - the coiled steel that stores and releases all the energy that keeps everything moving. What began in Los Angeles grew deliberately. We added locations when we found journeymen who shared the standard, not when the spreadsheet said to expand. Today our teams work across California - from San Diego up through Sacramento, out to Riverside and Long Beach, up to Santa Clara and Santa Clarita, over to Santa Ana and down through Fresno. Each location answers to the same standard, but each is staffed by people who live where they work.

Carl Dutton got into this trade the way a lot of people who stay in it do - by accident, then by obsession. He was twenty-two, between jobs, and helped a tradesman who trained him replace a torsion spring on a neighbor’s door in the Valley. The smell of the steel, the precise tension of winding, the moment when a door that had been dead weight suddenly balanced on a fingertip - it hooked him. He’d expected manual labor. He found a craft.
That was 1982. For the next two years he apprenticed under that same tradesman, learning to read a door the way a mechanic reads an engine - by sound, by resistance, by the telltale wear patterns in the hinges and rollers. He learned that a garage door is the largest moving object in most homes, and that most people ignore it completely until it fails them at the worst possible moment. He learned that fixing it right meant understanding the whole system, not just the broken part.
What gets Carl out of bed now, forty-two years later, isn’t the broken spring or the opener that quit. It’s the homeowner on the other side of the door. The winters in San Francisco still mean crawling under half-frozen doors in driveways that never see sun. Carl has spent forty-two years in the garage door trade, starting as an apprentice winding torsion springs by hand and building Mainspring Garage Door Co. into a network of locations across California. He holds every state license his role requires, trains directly with Raynor and LiftMaster on new opener systems and safety standards, and still reviews service standards for every location that carries our name.
What separates Carl from a franchise technician is simple: he built the standard, and he enforces it personally. On weekends you’ll find him in his workshop restoring mid-century tool cabinets, a hobby that reflects the same patience he brings to every door system. He believes a tool that fits your hand right and a spring that’s wound to exact specification share the same virtue - they’re both built to outlast their owner.
